I'll be hitting the road for CO next Tuesday and will taking a few days and looking to kite (forecast permitting) on the way. I could hit Deadman's before Billings, but beyond that I don't know any spots. I could go Billings, Sheridan, Casper. Or I could go Laurel, Hwy 16/20 past Boysen Res, and then to Casper. Anyone have any advice? I'd like to leave town with a list of potential spots. Better yet, anyone wanna meet up if there's wind?

Traveling MT, WY, CO next week. Looking to kite

I went to Lander a few weeks ago & kited Boysen and Big Sandy. Boysen had good wind & shitty launches but the wind was really cycling that day. The water is warm. I've kited Lake DeSmet over by Buffalo and had a really nice 2 hour session on a NE wind. Mark that kites with us up in the Bighorns knows that lake pretty good - I have his phone #. Big Sandy may be way out of your route but it was a nice lake for kiting. Great sandy launch with islands for flat glass and decent chop outside the islands. Good clean wind there. I think Buffalo Bill can be good but I haven't kited it. A buddy also suggested that Fontenelle Reservoir would be really good - which would be close to Big Sandy. Ocean Lake is also very close to Boysen - so if you went the west route you could hit Deadmans, then Buffalo Bill, then Boysen, then Ocean Lake, then Big Sandy, then Fontenelle. Might take 4 days to get to CO if there's wind.
Thanks Dave, I was planning to call you. Seems likely I'll take the west route. Jeff Z is in Billings now and can hit Deadman's on Tues if it's windy.
Looks like a good route could hit Deadman's, Buffalo Bill, soak at Thermopolis, possibly Boysen. Know anything about Wheatland? Some CO guys at the gorge recommended it. Could also try out Hattie near Chyanne, but I may try that on the way back or while I'm there. It's only 90 minutes from Fort Collins.
Lake Hattie would be good if you could make it there on a w or sw wind. It can blow 50 there so bring your 7 or 6m. There is another little lake that I kited that I can get you directions to that is right of the highway past Laramie. It is about .2 of a mile wide by .5 long and grass all around it. I have done two trips to Laramie in the last two years and have some inkling of the area and where to ride. give me a call if you do head that way.
Look up
Lake Hattie, Twin Buttes Lake, Meeboer Lake (these are all on the same road 2 miles apart)
Alsop Lake is the small one that I have ridden.
